LOS ANGELES ( — A 20-year-old man was charged Wednesday with murder and other counts in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that left a Los Angeles Police Department officer dead.

Mynor Enrique Varela was arrested Tuesday following the crash that killed Officer Roberto Sanchez over the weekend, police said.

The driver of an SUV collided with a patrol car around 4 a.m. Saturday on Anaheim Street in Harbor City. Sanchez, 32, and his partner, Officer Richard Medina, were injured and transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where Sanchez later died.

Medina suffered numerous injuries, including a broken jaw. He was released from the hospital Monday morning.

Varela allegedly left the crash scene but was taken into custody later that day along with another person. They both were originally arrested on charges that were unrelated to the traffic incident. Verela is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Long Beach.
